Analysis: Vaccine Skepticism is More Than a Lack of Knowledge Problem. It’s Actually About Gut Beliefs.

For years, scientists and doctors have treated vaccine skepticism as a knowledge problem. If patients were hesitant to get vaccinated, the thinking went, they simply needed more information.

But as public health officials now work to convince Americans to get Covid-19 vaccines as quickly as possible, new social science research suggests that a set of deeply held beliefs is at the heart of many people’s resistance, complicating efforts to bring the coronavirus pandemic under control.

“The instinct from the medical community was, ‘If only we could educate them,’” said Dr. Saad Omer, director of the Yale Institute for Global Health, who studies vaccine skepticism. “It was patronizing and, as it turns out, not true.”

How India’s second wave became the worst COVID-19 surge in the world

How India’s second wave became the worst COVID-19 surge in the world

New Delhi (National Geographic)---   During the past few weeks, Indian social media has been inundated with SOS messages: hospitals tweeting about dwindling oxygen supplies and physicians watching helplessly as patients perish from preventable deaths. A journalist pleading for but denied a hospital bed took to Twitter to log his deteriorating condition till he died.

Overwhelmed crematoria are working round-the-clock to keep up with the pace of bodies; furnaces have melted down from overuse and additional funeral platforms are being built outside. Such are the heartbreaking messages and haunting images that highlight the formidable second wave of the coronavirus pandemic raging through the country.

Florida's Covid infection rate among younger persons among nation's highest --study

FAU study: Florida's young COVID infection rate among nation's highest

A new study from a professor at Florida Atlantic University found Florida's infection rate for residents 25 and younger are among the worst in the nation.

Dr. Patrick Bernet, Associate Professor of Health Administration, studied COVID infection rates by age and found Florida had one of the highest rates of infection for younger residents in 2020 -- elevating the risk for all age groups.

"Infections don't stay in age cohorts," Dr. Bernet said.

His research, published in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, found that older counties had lower infection rates than younger counties -- and that younger counties had larger outbreaks that spread to older age groups, elevating the risk to seniors.
