The role of police enforcement in public health emergencies
The COVID-19 pandemic, which has lasted for nearly 3 years, has killed millions of people worldwide. Globally, during this public health emergency of international concern, the police have played an important role in maintaining social stability and preventing the crisis from further escalating during lockdowns.1 They also partnered with local centres for disease control and prevention (CDC) to track citizens’ information to prevent the virus from spreading and conducted crisis communication to keep people away from misinformation.

Analysis: Why The US leads the world in weather catastrophes

The US leads the world in weather catastrophes. Here's why
The United States is Earth's punching bag for nasty weather. The nation's weather chief and other experts say the U.S. gets hit by stronger, costlier, more varied and frequent extreme weather than anywhere on Earth. Those include tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, blizzards and the like. The reason is geography. Two oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, mountains, the jet stream and jutting peninsulas all combine to brew up severe storms. But nasty weather by itself isn't a disaster. What makes nature's bad hand a disaster is humans.

Second high-level interregional meeting on the health of refugees and migrants
Amid the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes in the Syrian Arab Republic and Türkiye over a month ago, as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine now past its one-year mark, 3 WHO regional offices this week brought together governments, civil society and health partners in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, for the second high-level meeting on the health of refugees and migrants – a timely gathering to ensure that refugees and migrants have access to health care across the migration route during emergencies and beyond. Hosted by the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, along with WHO’s African and European regions, with support from WHO’s Health and Migration Programme, the objective of this meeting is to move forward the implementation of strategic priorities agreed at last year’s high-level meeting on refugee and migrant health in Türkiye, through i
